On Ice

Early in her essay ‘On Ice,’ Jennifer Gersten laments that there is no Norwegian deity of friction, to help her traverse the icy streets of Oslo. This illustration thus imagines a Goddess of Friction, offering forth tools of traction: gravel, cleats, and a ‘freestyle’ embrace of deliberate sliding.
